Assyrians threatened to be extinct
Peoples, who have been in Iraq for thousands of years, among them the Christian Assyrians, are now threatened to be extinct. In the midst of the violence, it is the minorities of the country that have been affected worst, according to an alarming report from London based human rights organization Minority Rights Group International.
As well as The human rights organization, Human Rights Watch (HRW) warns that the situation can be worsened in the province of Nineveh, where Mosul is the capital, and where amongst others Christian Assyrians, Yezidies, and Turkmens are targets of violence and oppression from Kurdish and Arab groups.
The rivalry between Kurds and Arabs about the political power has been emphasized by the attempts of controlling the rich oil assets. The Kurdish authorities are accused of arbitrary arrests and threats against those who oppress against Kurdish interests.
The conflict has also created a base for more violence from Sunni-Arab extremists who”continue killing members of minorities, especially religious minorities”, according to the New York based human rights watch group.
-Earlier we understood that we lived under a totalitarian regime which conducted assaults. But now we are supposed to be free and democratic. But this democracy is killing us, a representative for the Christian Assyrians in the Nineveh-province told HRW.
The Christian Assyrians founded their first congregations in northern Iraq about 2,000 years ago, and have lived in the area since 6,000 years ago. They survived both the Muslim invasion in the 600s, and the Moguls in the 13th century. Now they are considered, because of their religious belief, to be allies with the occupational forces of the US, and they witness their churches being demolished, and their fellow Christians being killed.
